The legend of the poured over alpine meadow
The legend of the poured over alpine meadowThe Hochkönig Mountain was not as grim, hard to reach and snow covered once. The sun was shining warmly, the wind blowing softly higher up and instead of the glacier field a green alpine meadow was shining and lush. And down in the Valley of Dienten the cowbells were heard ringing.
But other sounds also found their way down from the mountain as funny, sturdy alpine dairymaids went about their business. They laughed and sang and celebrated day and night. From the dairymen in Salzburg they ordered the finest delicacies and wines – and how they understood the Salzburg cuisine!
However, from all the living on the fat of the land they became reckless and shameless. They paved the roads with cheese, bathed themselves in milk and threw butter at each other. The cows got silver bells around their necks and the bull’s horns were gold-plated. The people down in the village already whispered rumours that “those up there” were not really very God-fearing and devout.
One evening an old man arrived at the Alp, dressed in a green pilgrim’s coat. He was holding a hiking stick in his hand and had his hat drawn deep down over his face, he asked kindly for shelter. The dairymaids though laughed in his face and sent him away.
The history of the Übergossenen Alm On the next day a cloud gathered around the mountain – black and threatening. Even the oldest villagers could not remember seeing anything like it before. Bolts of lightning were flashing around the summit and the whole of the Pinzgau district was shaking from the thunder. Above the Alp, a massive flood came down – freezing to ice in an instant. The devils though broke screaming through the holes of the rock face.
In case you have your doubts about this story, look up to the Hochkönig Mountain and you can still see the devils’ holes to this day.
Nowadays the “Übergossene Alm” (poured over alpine meadow) is found at the foot of the Hochkönig Mountain. The delicacies and best wines are still there, together with the upbeat dairymaids; although these days they have calmed down and lead a respectable life; and those who look for shelter are not sent away.
